Lecture 1 Chapter 1 Myths of Communication Solves all problems Same as a relationship (just because we communicate with someone doesn’t mean we have a relationship with them) Always face to face Common Sense (it is something that you are taught) Its always a good thing Communication Convey messages (Strategic) Results/goals Receiver Requires feedback Verbal and nonverbal Sender Always happening – communication never stops Communicate with yourself Can be interference (language barriers, yourself, etc.) Characteristics Talk about communication as a human experience o Dyads – we look at 2 people and how they talk o Important bc human communication is a learned process o In order to be effective in communicating we have to learn the language, what it means, how to use the word correctly, the nonverbal communication we use Creative o We create the means by which we communicate Collective Regulatory o All of our communication is there to help us meet goals
