UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS SCHOOL OF INFANTRY - EAST AND WEST TRAINING COMMAND CAMP LEJEUNE, NORTH CAROLINA 28542-0161 CAMP PENDELTON, CALIFORNIA 92055-5101 STUDENT OUTLINE BALLISTIC COMPUTER SSC0208 07/07/2015 LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR THIS LESSON a. TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE . (1) Given electronic devices, ballistic data, and MET data, operate a firing solution device to process data that will facilitate point of aim/point of impact within the first round. (0317-MARK-2004) b. ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVES . (1) Given a ballistic computer, ballistic data, hand-held weather station, sniper weapon system, 20 rounds of ammunition, one target at 100 meters and one target at transonic range, while wearing directed body armor protection level, true the ballistic computer to the designated weapon to achieve True Minute Of Angle (TMOA). (0317-MARK-2004b) (2) Given a ballistic computer, ballistic data, hand-held weather station, 10 rounds of ammunition, a zeroed sniper weapon system, targets at subsonic range, while wearing directed body armor protection level, compute data for ballistic coefficient extrapolation to develop an algorithm to engage targets beyond the maximum effective range. (0317-MARK-2004c)
STUDENT INFORMATION OVERVIEW : The purpose of this period of instruction is to provide you with the skills necessary to operate a firing solution device that will facilitate point of aim/point of impact within the accuracy of the weapon system to engage targets. I will do this by covering the components of a ballistic computer kit, operating a ballistic computer, inputting data into a ballistic computer, using the ATrag software, truing, extrapolation, and angle shooting. This period of instruction relates to all marksmanship training. CLASS PREPARATION : Read this handout prior to class. OUTLINE : 1. COMPONENTS OF A BALLISTIC COMPUTER KIT . a. Trimble Recon handheld computer (AA PowerBoot and ATrag CF chip installed). b. Two styluses. c. Two lanyards. d. Hand strap. e. International AC charger. f. Four localized plugs for charger. g. Rechargeable PowerBoot. h. 12 volt charging adaptor. i. Self-adhesive range data pad. j. Recon basic manual. 2. OPERATING A BALLISTIC COMPUTER . a. The first step to operating the computer is to connect the power source with one of the four options that come with the kit. 2
b. The first time the Recon boots up, you will need to align the touch screen by tapping the center of the cross at each of the five locations it appears on the screen. c. Set the date and time. d. The Recon will then ask to set a password. It is a good idea to skip setting a password. e. To adjust the screen intensity and turn off sounds, click on the Start Menu located at the top left corner. Tap settings and this brings up the settings icons. For backlight adjustment, click the system tab. For sound adjustment, click the personal tab.
