Lecture 5 Self-Concept – understanding of who you are Self-Disclosure – sharing things about ourselves so that we build a relationship; the willingness to make known to other people information about our self Relates to intimacy because we build intimacy in our relationship through self-disclosure Trust – crucial with self-disclosure o Trust is the perception we have about somebody’s character o Different types of trust Trusting Behavior: what we do when we decide to share information with another person; it’s what we think about before we share our secret with another person; we think about three things Understand that the person we are sharing information with that can act in a way that is beneficial to us or harmful to us We’re aware that the outcome is completely dependent on that other person We believe the person is going to behave in a way that is beneficial to us Trustworthy Behavior: what we do when someone self-discloses with us Aware of the other person’s motivational preferences
