(0317-M40-2002b)STUDENT INFORMATIONOVERVIEW: The purpose of this period of instruction is to familiarize you with the M40A5 series sniper rifle with a focus on performing preventive maintenance and weapons handling procedures. I will do this by discussing the history of the M40 series sniper rifle, nomenclature, characteristics, associated equipment, cycle of operation, disassembly and reassembly, loading and unloading, immediate action, gun set-up, carriage, safety issues, ammunition, cleaning, functions check, troubleshooting, and the gun record book of the M40A5 sniper rifle. This lesson relates to all marksmanship instruction. CLASS PREPARATION: Read this handout prior to class.OUTLINE: 1. HISTORY OF THE M40 SERIES SNIPER RIFLE. a. Vietnam introduced the M40 sniper rifle, which was a Remington 700 action (receiver) with a heavy barrel, wood stock, and Redfield scope. b. Around 1976, the weapon and the mission of the sniper were evaluated, and in 1977 a prototype of the new M40A1 sniper rifle was developed. 2
c. A precision match armorer at WTBn Quantico, VA built the M40A1 rifles. The weapons were hand built from various parts andfitted for the rifle. Some improvements included a McMillan synthetic stock, better barrels, re-cut receivers and mounts.
