Assignment for Off Unit Experience 1. Summarize the general pathophysiology of the patient’s condition. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is an abnormal dilation of the wall of the abdominal aorta that usually develops in the vessel between the renal arteries and the iliac branches of the aorta. These aneurysms develop gradually over time and are most commonly caused by atherosclerosis, which weakens the vessels and decreases their elasticity, and eventually leading to dilation. Since the vessels are weak and overstretched, the aorta can easily burst and cause bleeding that can quickly lead to death. Abdominal aortic aneurysms generally tend to be asymptomatic and are most often found during a physical examination, presenting a pulsating mass or auscultation of a bruit. Patients may experience flank pain in the abdominal area and arterial insufficiency because the aneurism exerts pressure on surrounding tissues as it becomes enlarged. The aneurism can be fixed by surgical repair in order to prevent the aorta from rupturing. 2. Compare and contrast the roles of the nurses on both units. Address the positive and negatives that you personally identify as they relate to your professional goals. The nursing staff on the ER unit functioned completely different than the nurses on the med surg unit. The ER staff worked as teams, each consisting of two or three RNs and a patient care assistant.
