Unformatted text preview: (1) Title: Race and Your Community Name: Jordan Miller Course: ETH 125 Due Date: Sunday, July 18, 2010 Instructor: Sheila Farr (2) Hello, my name is Jordan Miller and I am a 32 year old white male. My live in girlfriend is a white female 26 years of age. I live in a small town in Ohio called Aberdeen which is just a stone throw away from Kentucky just across the Ohio River. I was born and raised a city boy and am used to racial integration. Since I moved to this town, I see very little of that. As of the 2000 census, the town of Aberdeen only has a population of 1603 people. I had more people and diversity in my old high school back in the city. The racial population of Aberdeen is comprised of 96.88% white 1.37% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 0.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.25% of the population. Being that the county in which I live, as well as surrounding counties in Ohio and neighboring Kentucky are all set within the hills outside of any nearby city, I have noticed very limited diversity in race. I believe this is because the majority of citizens from these particular regions have lived here for generations upon generations. This area is historically known for what outsiders may call hillbillies or rednecks. With this in mind, when moving here I did not expect to fit in at all. I was raised in an urbanized area in the city of Norfolk, Virginia where it was common to see white males and females dressing in popular fashionable clothes one may see on television or in magazines. I listen to all sorts of music including classic rock, some country, and jazz, but most of all I enjoy hip hop and r&b. With these things in mind, I figured I would stand out and be singled out almost instantly. I thought that I would have plenty of run-ins with the locals of this town. This, however, has yet to be seen anywhere I have been. This, however, has yet to be seen anywhere I have been....
