Class notes nov 29 th Depression: Becks cognitive model Notion that self schema produces automatic thoughts, leading people to engage in various cognitive biases. -although he originifally talked about self schemas, talked about them loosely. Over time specified in detail what the model is, notion that not the case that depressive self schema are always active, like any cognitive representation can be triggered by particular cues in the environment that lead it to interpret your emotional state. -self schemas can be “latent”, sitting there. (available in memory, not always cognitively accessible.) carrying around these notions about yourself, not up and influencing your associations and interpretations of your emotional state. Suggests that What are the cues that evoke these mental representations? When you are no longer depressed, those depressive self schemas should no longer be cognitively accessible and up. But does not mean they have disappeared. (depression has remitted) should still show the “markers and vulnerability factors” for depression. Problem: “latent” pessimistic self schemas. Fascination with understanding what is going on with people who are remitted depressive. Fertile area of research Comparing latent depressives with depressed and non depressed people Self schema automatic thoughts. cognitive distortions Cognitive therapy: 1) learning to become aware of these automatic thoughts as they go through your mind very quickly. 2) become mindful/aware of these thoughts as they go through your mind. (could be destructive due to rumination) hurling bad thoughts about yourself. 3) process to learn and practice distancing a little bit from these thoughts. Getting people use to the idea that there is more than 1 interpertation, 2 nd just because something went into your mind doesn’t mean its true, and 3 rd something else can be true a) decentering, many of these interpretations involve self blame and calling yourself names. Making yourself the cause of whatever it is that subsequently happened. Blaming yourself as the cause of all bad things. Easy to sink into a worst and worst
