e 115 Engineering Thermodynamics Fall 2009 University of California Problem set 26 Due: Wednesday, November 25 th , in lecture There will be no penalty for problem sets submitted by November 30 th , in lecture. 1) (10 points) Three equations for the standard free energy change for the oxidation of Mg as expressed by the reaction: Mg + 1 2 O 2 ( g ) = MgO( s ) are: Δ G °= 604, 000 5.36 T ln T + 142.0 T J (i) Δ G °= 759, 800 13.4 T ln T + 317.0 T J (ii) Δ G °= 608,100 0.44 T ln T + 112.8 T J (iii) One of these expressions is for the oxidation of solid Mg, one is for the oxidation of liquid Mg, and one is for the oxidation of gaseous Mg. a) Determine which equation is for which oxidation. (3 points) b) Calculate the melting and normal boiling temperatures of Mg. (2 points) c) Accurately and quantitatively plot Δ G ° as a function of temperature for the oxidation of Mg. As you will see in Wednesday’s lecture, this is known as the Ellingham line. (5 points)
