Orthodontist Is there a description of the work, e.g. type of tasks performed in the position, products or services provided? The most common procedure performed by orthodontists are fixing the problems with the alignment of people’s teeth and/or jaw. The main reason people will appeal to orthodontists is because of aesthetic reasons; such problems that can occur are crooked teeth, extra/crowded teeth, open bites, cross bites, underbites and overbites. There are also medical reasons people will see orthodontists for, including essential teeth functions like mastication (biting and chewing), deglutition (process of swallowing) and phonation (speech). (Orthodontist Salaries, 2015) Orthodontists will diagnose jaw/dental problems and then plan appropriate treatment for them. The length and type of treatment is determined by the issue with the teeth. Dental appliances used include braces, labial/lingual arch wires, maintainers and retainers, these are placed onto the teeth to create symmetry in the face, teeth and jaw. (Orthodontist’s Guide, n.d.) There are a lot of different treatment options available these days, such as retainers, clear aligners, invisible, metal, ceramic and micro braces. (American Association of Orthodontists, 2015) To avoid overcrowded teeth as well as to create some space, some patients have to have teeth pulled out before beginning their treatment. Orthodontists will then regularly check and alter the appliances to create the best possible outcome. They can change the wires, tighten them, or issue elastics for patients to wear. (Orthodontist’s Guide, n.d.) According to Carolina Braces the total treatment time usually lasts from as little as 9 months to as long as 5 years. The average amount of time is roughly between 18-24 months. Factors that can contribute to the length of it is whether the patient continues to diligently wear their retainers and elastics. ( Melbourne Orthodontic Group, 2015) In Australia, the average cost of Invisalign treatment ranges from $6,000to $9,000, but if you only need very minor correction, treatment can start from as little as $4,500. Metal braces (traditional braces) : $3,000 - 7,000 Ceramic braces : $4,000 - 8,000 Lingual braces : $8,000 - 10,000 Invisalign : $4,000 - 7,400 Prices depend on where you live – orthodontists in more rural areas are often less expensive than ones in larger cities - and may be at the orthodontist's discretion.
The impact of technology of duties performed, e.g. improving work conditions, productivity, creating or destroying certain work/positions- give examples Although they do create more work positions, it isn’t a lot. The jobs it creates include an orthodontic assistant and a receptionist. The technology of braces improve people’s smile and therefore will boost their self esteem. People can be less self conscious about themselves as they won’t have teeth gaps or crooked teeth. It also can be beneficial for them as essential teeth functions will be able to work.
