Chapter 4 Key Words: Bioenergetics – the study of how energy from the sun is transformed into energy in living things Important to know – every chemical reaction involves a change in energy Enzymes – organic catalysts that speed up the rate of a reaction by lowering the activation energy of the reaction; they do so without altering the reaction itself Exergonic reaction – reaction in which the products have less energy than the reactants; simply put, energy is given off Endergonic reaction – a reaction in which the products have manure energy than the reactants; simply put energy is consumed Activation energy – the energy required start a chemical reaction Enzyme specificity – a substrate is very specific to its enzyme Substrate – the target molecule; the reactant Active site – the area of the enzyme where the substrate binds Enzyme-substrate complex – forms when the substrate binds to the active site Enzymes Do – (1) increase the rate of a reaction by lowering the reactions activation energy (2) form temporary enzyme-substrate complexes (3) remain unaffected by the reaction Enzymes Do Not – (1) change the reaction (2) make reactions occur that otherwise not occur at all
