PHI 108.04: Logical and Critical Reasoning  Time: MW – 3:50 - 5:10  Place: Social and Behavioral Sciences, Room  S218 Instructor: Mark Green Office hours:  M 2:30-3:30, and by appointment  Office: Harriman 150  Email:  [email protected] TEXTS:     Language, Proof and Logic  - Jon Barwise and John Etchemendy, CSLI Publications Note: This text comes with a software package that  is required  for this course.  Your first  software assignment is not due until September 21st, and if you are considering dropping  this course, you will do well to not break the seal on your text.    The Logic of Real Arguments , Second Edition -  Alec Fisher, Cambridge University Press.   Note: We will be using material from the second edition, so if you find a cheaper first edition  online, plan on being nice enough to get someone to lend you the extra material as needed.    COURSE OBJECTIVES:     This course is designed with two main aims:  first, it offers a very basic  introduction to the discipline of formal logic as it is studied in the field of philosophy, and secondly it  develops our ability to recognize and evaluate an argument.  The first of these provides some  exposure to the course’s specific academic field, while the second is intended to enhance your  studies in general, both academic and not.  Toward this latter end, we will be applying the critical  methods studied in this course to material from other disciplines.  This course will make moderate  demands on both your time and your reading ability.  I will never take attendance, but much of your  grade comes from participation in classroom activities and exercises.  If you anticipate an  uncontrollable urge to cut class often, this course might be a bad fit for you.  This course will also  require a critical reading of confusing academic texts, which in turn entails a degree of comfort with
