Michael Johnson Sociology 300 10-10-2010 Ethnography The purpose of this ethnography is to observe the way individuals in society behave while riding a public bus. I hope to observe whether people riding the bus will obey the social norms of riding the bus or completely ignore them. To my understanding, social norms are the expected standard of behavior which all of society can agree upon. Will this experience be any different than riding my own personal vehicle? With this question in mind, I start my journey at the University Way NE bus stop. I will be taking the seventy fourth bus route, which goes from University Way to the Downtown Seattle bus station. When I arrive at the bus stop, it is very crowded. It is rainy out, and no more room under the shelter of the bus stop is available. I am getting soaked when I notice that one of the men that were standing underneath the shelter asked an elderly woman if she would like to trade places with him. This seemed very unusual to me, especially when I realized that two more elderly
