Jae Shin (Clarice Kim, Janice Chow, R Leger) 10/12/10 Wendy Ingram Lab Report #5 Lab 5: Frog Heart Study I. Introduction Background: In this frog dissection lab, cardiac muscle will be studied. Each group of students will be given a pithed frog, whose brain and nerves are destroyed so that the procedure and manipulations does not cause the animal any pain. Humane treatment of animals is important and necessary for the best and ethical scientific purposes. Frog heart, unlike the human heart, has two atria and only one ventricle and a sinus venosus. The presence of only ventricle that collects blood from both atria results in mixture of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in the frog. The presence of a spiral valve ensures the sufficient separation of blood as well. Heart is majorly composed of myocardial cells, which are joined to each other by intercalated discs, containing desmosomes and gap junctions. Desmosomes help to hold cells together during heart contraction and relaxation and the gap junctions allow passage of molecules and ions in and out of the heart muscle cells. The action potential travels down the T-tubule system, which eventually triggers the release of Calcium from the SR, the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Calcium fuels the excitation contraction coupling and ultimately causes the heart to contract. Hypothesis:
