Background to The Division of Labour in Society Durkheim’s book (his first major work) explored the social consequences of changes in “social solidarity” found in the transition from agricultural to industrial society Argued that the nature of social solidarity changed in response to new developments in the division of labor within industrial (or modern) economies Contended that the keys to a healthy society were its social solidarity and moral integrity Disagreed other social theorists (Herbert Spencer as well as the Marxists) who thought that increases in the division of labor would lead to social disintegration and breakdown

What is the “division of labor”? (simplest definition) Who does what? The ways by which societies determine who does what job in the economy Sometimes refers to manufacturing systems where production is broken into separate tasks, each person doing one task, (i.e., assembly line production)
