(2006). Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices (9 th Ed.) . Boston, MA: Pearson. Course Description : This course will cover the principles and processes of small groups and development of skills for participation and leadership in small group settings. In addition, the course will discuss practices in problem solving, decision making, and information sharing. Prerequisites: Eng 101, or Eng 107 or Equivalent. 3-credits . Course Objectives : Identify and describe basic theories, purposes, functions, and characteristics of small groups. Organize and conduct small group meetings using a variety of formats. Identify major factors and describe the roles involved in group dynamics. Demonstrate effective verbal, nonverbal, intercultural and interpersonal communication skills in small group settings. Identify and use effective conflict management and team building techniques. Identify, describe, and demonstrate key leadership functions within small groups. Use appropriate problem solving techniques to identify, analyze and resolve a problem in a small group setting. Grade Policies Attendance : You are required to attend this class. This class is participation laden and requires your presence as group members. You are allowed 3 unofficial absences after which 10-points will be deducted from your overall grade for each additional absence. Note: The only mandatory attendance day is the final day of class. You must be present or the above rule applies.
