Embryonic Stem Cell Research -Scientists believed embryonic stem cells showed more potential than adult stem cells. -The first time this research was tested was in 1981, embryonic stem cells were independently first derived from mouse embryos by two groups. -The primary clinical source is the aborted fetus and unused embryos currently housed in frozen storage at IVF facilities. Difference between Embryonic and Adult stem cell research -Adult stem cells are undifferentiated cells, found throughout the body after embryonic development, that multiply by cell division to replenish dying cells and regenerate damaged tissues. -Scientific interest in adult stem cells has centered on their ability to divide or self-renew indefinitely, and generate all the cell types of the organ from which they originate, potentially regenerating the entire organ from a few cells. -Unlike embryonic stem cells, the use of adult stem cells in research and therapy is not considered to be controversial as they are derived from adult tissue samples rather than destroyed human embryos. -In all fairness, adult stem cells have restricted differentiation potential and do not proliferate as well as embryonic stem cells. -They have mainly been studied in humans and model organisms such as mice and rats. Cons -Those who value human life from the point of conception, oppose embryonic stem cell research because the extraction of stem cells from this type of an embryo requires its destruction. -Others argue against such research on medical grounds.
