Nadia Fiaz Brian Temple KNR208 9/12/10 Issue 8: Should Embryonic Stem Cell Research Be Permitted? Section 1: Embryonic Stem Cell Research A. This research could be a stepping stone for mankind, but is it worth it? Embryonic stem cells are cells that are capable of dividing without differentiating for a prolonged period in culture (Bethesta, 2010). Embryonic stem cells could one day lead to a cure for diabetes, restore mobility to paralyzed individuals, offer treatment for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, create new cells to treat disease, and possibly help humans regenerate body parts (Hart, 2004/ 2010). However, the only way to create embryonic stem cells it to create an embryo. The problem that arises is that an embryo is considered one of the first stages of human life. This is what has made embryonic stem cell research one of the most controversial topics going on in the world. Section II: Pros on embryonic stem cell research The pros of embryonic stem cell research include: the ability to treat diseases that we do not have a cure for yet, create different types of cells for the human body, and the possibility of preventing birth defects (Devine, 2009). Embryonic stem cells are capable of transforming into almost any cell in the human body.
