Josh Litwicki Lab 2 report Preparation of Aspirin and Some Flavoring Esters Introduction Aspirin is very commonly used in pills that fight off headaches. It is relatively easy to synthesize so that’s why it is commonly used in undergraduate chemistry labs [1] . The ability to produce substances like aspirin is very important in chemistry. Chemistry students need to be able to use this ability and apply it to other important parts of chemistry like theoretical and actual yield equations. In this lab we displayed proficiency in areas of chemistry most college students need to be successful in their course. They need to be able to recall data and other information from previous classes to work more proficiently. In this experiment, a small portion of aspirin and acetic acid will be produced from the combining of salicylic acid and acetic anhydride along with concentrated sulfuric acid, the catalyst. Using a known amount of salicylic acid, we are able to determine the theoretical yield of aspirin we should produce if all of the salicylic acid was converted into aspirin. But, things do not
