Conservation of Linear Momentum Purpose : Finding how changing mass will affect an object’s velocity. Question : How does changing the mass of objects affect a collision of the objects? Hypothesis: If the total mass of both of the two different colliding carts is increased, then the final velocity of the carts after the collision will then decrease, because mass and velocity will be what results in momentum. Variables: Independent: Masses of both carts Dependent: Final velocity after the collision Materials: All of the materials in the virtual lab. Procedure: Step 1.Open the online gizmo and open the demo. After completing the demo return to the set up of the experiment. Step 2: Make the experiment gizmo trail a collision of one moving and one staying still. Set the Elasticity to 0. Make both gliders have a mass of 0.5 kg. Put glider number one to the far left end of the track, and put glider number two at the 6 meter mark of the track. Make the velocity of one glider to 3 and the other to zero. Press the button that starts the experiment.
