Schneller, Chairperson February 1, 2011 Dear Student, Parent, Guardian: The National Spanish Examination is an online, standardized assessment tool given voluntarily by over 3500 teachers throughout the United States to measure proficiency and achievement of students who are studying Spanish as a second language. The mission of the National Spanish Examination (NSE) is to recognize student achievement and to promote language proficiency in the study of the Spanish. The National Spanish Examinations were developed as a motivational, extra-curricular activity and contest for students by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese (AATSP). Since its inception in 1957, the NSE has continually changed in format and content to stay current with the changes in language- learning theory and assessment. Secondary students of all public, parochial and private schools (middle school, junior high school or high school) who are not foreign exchange students and whose teachers are members of the AATSP may sit for the examination.
