Belgrad AMS 2030 ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM I. The “crisis of subject matter” In the 1930s there was realism and a realistic style type of art. Realists tradition in the 1940’s gets wrapped up in propaganda so they do not want to do realists art anymore during World War II. Wanted to make art that just isn’t political football, but still socially relevant II. Automatism (automatic painting) A. Surrealism Became the basis of the new movement that would lead to abstraction. Wanted to make art based on the unconscious mind. This is an art that is socially relevant, but not realists. B. and Jungian archetypes Argued with Freud that the unconscious was not just personal. Idea of collective unconscious and how it is trying to tell the whole society that something is wrong or there is a crisis of western civilization. Archetypes- unconscious symbol. C. abstraction and integrity Their answer to propaganda was abstract art. They don’t want to tell you what the art means, they believe you should see what it means in your own mind
