Chapter 1 01:00 Terms Organic chemistry- the branch of science that deals gnereally with  compounds of carbon  Valence shell- outermost shell of electrons  Valence electrons- electrons in valence shell  Octet rule- the tendancy of atoms to gain or loose valence electrons to form  ions with the noble-gas configuration  Ionic compound- chemical compound in which the component atoms exist as  ions  Electrostatic attraction- when the crystal structure is stabilized by an interation  between ions of opposite charge  Ionic bond- electrostatic attration that holds ions together , transfer of  elections  Covalent bond- consists of an electron pair that is shared between bonded  atoms Formal charge- sum of the formal charges on the individual atoms Polar bond- a bond in which electrons are shared unevenly  Electronegativity- the tendancy of an atom to attract electrons to itself in a
