Socy 105: Poverty and Welfare 19:35 Why Do Americans Hate Welfare What is it? o How does the author define welfare? o Main thesis/ aim of book Racial sterotypes contribute to opposition of welfare in America Americans don’t know what welfare actually is and they dislike what  they think it is Individualism Economic self interest little self interest involved in American  opposition o What date/evidence does he use to support his claims? Americans don’t support it in the US the way it is being given Americans are not in favor of people who don’t deserve welfare –  undeserving People who are on welfare typically African Americans and don’t  deserve it because they aren’t working hard enough As long as we have African Americans in poverty this will always be  an issue They don’t have a work ethic, “lazy” Comes from the way our culture portrays African American society o What theories/views are challenged about Americans’ view on welfare?
