1/31/11 35,000 year old flute- nomadic cultures found time and felt compelled to create art and music. Early cave paintings reflect human traits. Denote- that woman is beautiful. Connote- She’s pregnant. “Beautiful” Art is a way that reflects your place in society. Entertainment is a thrill. Can’t put monetary value on art. Morals- difference between right and wrong. Ethics- if there are two right or wrong answers, and you pick the better one. Art combats harmful reactions by slowing it down. Sarabande- banned by the Church. Very sad melody Bach- he applied notes that aren’t actually written and your ears fill in the rest. Doesn’t move by steps, it leaps. Explores ideas of Depth of tragedy and human nobility. At the end Bach leaves it up to performer to decide how to end it. Folk Art- passed down through generations, no professional instruction, not a lot of technique. Popular Art- want to hook you in and make you sick of it to buy the next thing. Main objective is to make money.
