Yuxin 1 Guo Yuxin Professor Lindsay English 1102, section 6 6 September 2007 Essay #2: Cultural Awareness There are three main characters in Everyday Use — Dee, Maggie, and their mother. Their perspectives toward culture are different. The difference comes from both environmental and temporal aspects. Actually, the truth is that they hold different awareness toward their culture. Dee’s mother refused her daughter’s request of the quilt. It is not only because she had already promised to give it to Maggie, Dee’s younger daughter, but also because she realized that Dee was not qualified to inherit their culture. She was lacking of culture awareness. However, he was used to their culture. She lived with her mother and sister, eating the same food, wearing “old fashioned” clothes, using “Dee” as her name. After a long time away from her culture, living in a new environment, Dee adapted to a new culture. She also wearing fashion clothes, Fig. 1.
