Why Rural Development? • Majority of People live in Rural Areas • Most crops are grown in subsistence production for domestic/local CONSUMPTION. (subsistence means sufficient) • Due to increasing urban populations, the trend is away from subsistence production to surplus production to feed urban residents. • Africa has the potential to be global food producers. • Increasingly, much of the agricultural crops are “cash crops” which are produced for export.
