Communication was one of the many issues that was occurring within the Abbot Company. It seemed like there was a complete lack of communication throughout the various levels of the organization. The communication between Edward Nolan and Frank Mason seemed to be the biggest issue. Frank noticed that there was a lot of downward communication occurring in the workplace. Although this type of communication works in some environments, it is apparent that in its current form, it is not working. The ideal solution would be to completely restructure how the downward communication is happening or to switch up the communication style entirely. Upward communication is used to provide feedback to higher ups in the organization and it “keeps managers aware of how employees feel about their jobs, coworkers, and the organization in general,” 1 something that Nolan was surely not conscious of. If upward communication was implemented into Abbot, many of the managers would have a much clearer understanding of the items that need to be improved.
