Over Thanksgiving break, my family and I went down to Washington DC. While I was there I visited the National Gallery of Art. The gallery was a beautiful place filled with many different types of art. One of the works of art that caught my eye was “The Railway”. It is a very interesting painting. “The Railway” is a painting done by Edouard Manet. This piece of art is along with other works that are around the same genre. There were also many different styles of art in the room too. “The Railway” depicts two people, a mother and her young daughter, sitting outside of a train station. The two women are the subjects of the painting because they take up most of the area within it. In my opinion, there isn’t any content or message behind this painting. Its hard to understand exactly what an artist is thinking when they do art. Underneath the painting said that it was a gift for Horace Havemeyer. It is in memory of Horace’s mother, Louisine W. Havemeyer. This was the purpose for the creation of “The Railway”. The composition of the artwork is placed out well.
