Key Objectives for Chapter 2 1. Discuss the role of public relations in colonial American and how PR shaped the early history of the U.S. Know some of the key players and key events. Boston massacre, Boston Tea Party; helped to promote that the British were the enemy, tried to get war support; Samuel Adams was behind the staging of the tea party and came up with slogans; Federalist Papers 2. From your text, know about the role PR played in the industrial revolution. Investigative journalist exposed working conditions vs. the extravagant lives of industrialist families; Ida Tarbell, “history of standard oil”, triggered investigation which led to the down fall through the 1911 Sherman Anti-Trust Act; Nellie Bly wrote about child labor; Upton Sinclair wrote about immigrant workers and meat handling practices, lead to the passage of pure food and drug act in 1906 3. Know what a staged event is and give examples. Know what a pseudo-event is and give examples. Know who was considered the master of pseudo-events and give examples of some of his/her events. Events created just to give reporters something to report; Boston Tea Party; Barnum
