Lily Flynn Intro to Psychology 12/10/10 Stage theories contend that each person goes through different stages of development. These stages range in age from infancy to old age. Each stage is generalized as to what age each stage will begin and end according to the ideas of each psychologist who created varying stages of development. Four of these psychologists are Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, and Lawrence Kohlberg. Sigmund Freud developed the theory of psychosexual development. The stages of his theory consist of the oral stage, the anal stage, the phallic stage, the latent stage, and the genital stage. The oral stage is the infant's primary source of interaction occurs through the mouth, so the rooting and sucking reflex is especially important. In anal stage the primary focus of the libido was on controlling bladder and bowel movements. Developing this control leads to a sense of accomplishment and independence in a child. During the phallic stage, the primary focus of the libido is on the genitals. Children discover the differences between males and females. During the latent period, the libido interests are suppressed. The development of the ego and superego contribute to this period of calm. The final stage of psychosexual development, or the genital stage, is when the individual develops a strong sexual interest in the opposite sex. The major
