Behavior Therapy Systematic Desensitization Stimuli become associated with anxiety (Social Phobia) Therapy- Counterconditioning o Associates a pleasant, relaxed state with gradually increasing anxiety-triggering stimuli Commonly used to treat phobias Example: Fear of social situations (Social Phobia) Treatment: Create hierarchy of feared situations Imagine situations, then practice relaxation Example hierarchy: Talking to parents (rating= 1) Talking to friends (rating = 3) Talking to students after class (rating =5) Telling a story to the “cool” kids at a party (rating= 10) Flooding Flooding - a form of desensitization for treating phobias and anxieties by repeated exposure to highly distressing stimuli until the lack of anxiety in the face of the phobic object leads to extinction Cognitive Therapy Teaches people new, more adaptive ways of thinking and acting Based on the assumption that thoughts intervene between events and our emotional reactions
