Wong, Benny Gas Chromatography for E 1 Experiment Purpose The aim of the experiment is to use the methods of gas chromatography to separate and identify 2,4,4-trimethyl-1-pentene and 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-pentene isomers. Instrument Details The detector used was a flame ionization detector (FID). The carrier gas that was used was helium. The column utilized was a capillary column. The temperature of the capillary column reached 260°C. The initial temperature of the injector was 225°C. The temperature of the FID detector was 250°C. Method Used for Insertion of Compound Before any GC was conducted, the micro syringe was cleaned with acetone 5-10 times. After the cleaning, 2-3µL of the sample was loaded into the micro syringe. Once 2-3µL was loaded, expel most of the sample until only 0.4 µL was left in the syringe. When the

Pressure was applied to the plunger to prevent the gas pressure from expelling 1 Wong, Benny the plunger. The syringe was then plunged into the “Sample Inject Inlet” septum. Once the needle was snugly fit, the plunger was fully pressed. Once the sample has been loaded into the GC, press the “Start” button on the GC and quickly pull out the micro-syringe. Results Conclusion There were no problems encountered with the lab. Overall, this GC section was successful with a functional sample. This lab exercise will prove very useful in the future in future lab procedures. 2...
