Benny Wong 9/20/09 Sunday Lab Report Topic 2 Biological Macromolecules Purpose: In this lab, three objective biological macromolecules that were studied are: carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. Carbohydrates consist of only carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Lipids are compounds that consist mostly of carbon and hydrogen. Lipids take the forms as fats and oils. These compounds are nonpolar and hydrophilic. The last type of macromolecules that was observed in this lab is proteins. Proteins are composed of a combination of 20 differing amino acid combinations. The work that was done in this lab was to classify certain compounds as one of the three stated biological macromolecules using different indicator tests. Results Summary: The results for Activity A that utilized the Benedict’s reagent were that Tube 1 turned orange,

Unformatted text preview: while Tube 2 stayed the same. The results for Activity B that used iodine reagent to test the presence of starch were Tube 1 was positive and Tube 2 was negative. For the lipids exercise, Tube 1 turned positive, while Tube 2 stayed negative. For exercise 4, look at the table in the Results (continued). Significance: Based on the results from the indicator tests, these indicator tests confirms certain premonitions about certain foods. Certain compounds did not meet the ascertained expectations of what it was thought to be composed of. For example, the expected results for coconut was that it would have sugar, however it did not contain any sugar. This could be interpreted as certain factors contributing to the misreading of the results or the state of the matter that the compound was tested....
