In the Maldiva Archipelagothere are distinct atolls so related to each other in position, andseparated by channels either unfathomable or very deep (the channelbetween Ross and Ari atolls is 150 fathoms, and that between thenorth and south Nillandoo atolls is 200 fathoms in depth), that itis impossible to look at a map of them without believing that theywere once more intimately related. Not being aware of this fact,the insect, more than once, as I cautiously approached with myforceps, shuffled on one side just as the instrument was on thepoint of closing, and thus escaped.
