INTRODUCTION This project aims to investigate the impact of the contention window size on the performance of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. According to this protocol, all the nodes choose a random back off interval between zero and the size of the contention window and wait for the chosen number of slot times before trying to access the channel. Initially, the size of the contention window is set to the minimum, CWMin_. When there is a collision in the channel, the contention window size is doubled until the maximum value, CWMax_. This technique is used to reduce the collisions. We investigate the effect of the contention window with varying sizes for different nodes (a few modes misbehaving) and all nodes misbehaving. RESULTS a) Throughput – bandwidth 2Mbps, bit rate 70kbps Default contention window sizes, CWMin_=31, CWMax_=1023 No misbehaving nodes, packet size=250 bytes

The following are the observations made: In all the three cases, the throughput is found to be the maximum during the 30seconds interval. We observed that though the throughput in all the cases is similar at the 30seconds time interval, the number of dropped packets is more in the first case with 250bytes packet size, whereas the number of dropped packets is zero in the rest of the cases. The dropped packets may be due to either network congestion or packet collision. The throughput is less in the starting intervals (10-20) as only a few nodes start
