English 101 Pierre Durant Narrative Essay First Draft February 15, 2011 Freshman Orientation It was a hot, summer day in August when I made my first trip to George Mason University for my freshman orientation. My whole family piled into my father’s brown Ford F150 truck and we prepared snacks and refreshments for the four and a half hour trip to Fairfax, Virginia. An air of nostalgia in the air as my parents made subtle hints of how they’d miss me by bringing up memories of my youth saying things like: “It’s seems like yesterday, we were bringing you home from the hospital…” I’d just roll my eyes and smile as every rotation of the trucks wheels seemed to signal a distance from my youth and the foolishness of my past. I remembered being in high school skipping lunch and study block to go out with friends or my girlfriend, fishing in the local neighborhood lake, and then my final high school memory when I marched triumphantly across the stage at graduation. Clad in a gold gown with green, red, and gold cords signifying my academic and extracurricular
