Harsh Patel 11/15/2010 Homework 1 – PC Components, Motherboards, CPUs and Memory Student Name: Harsh Patel 1. When discussing Central Processing Units (CPU’s), there are many different kinds and buzzwords. Define the difference between Single Core, Multi-Core and Dual Processor CPU’s and/or system. Single Core – Single Core CPU’s only has 1 core on the CPU, so they can only perform 1 process at a time(unless they are hyper-threading Processor’s). Multi-Core – Multi- Core CPU’s have more than 1 core on a single CPU Chip unit. So if it says that the CPU is Quad-Core it means that the Processor CPU contains 4 processing units on a single chip processor. Dual Processor – Dual Processor means that there are two different processor or two different CPU’s in one computer. Furthermore, they can be single core or multicore CPU’s. 2. CPU’s are the brains of the computer and work closely with the motherboard. When deciding on the correct CPU, you need to take into account what the motherboard can handle as a maximum, and the specifications of the CPU, as the following example depicts. Describe, in user friendly language, what these terms mean in the table and why they are important. Specification Definition (what it means) Why it is important CPU Socket Type A CPU socket is a mechanical component that provides mechanical and electrical connections between a device usually a microprocessor and a printed circuit board (PCB). It is important what type of socket you have because there are many different types of sockets and CPU’s so if your CPU is made for a different type of socket than it won’t fit on your motherboard. You have to Buy a CPU compatible to you motherboard’s socket. One purpose why the CPU sockets where invented is because when a CPU dies or is damaged you can just buy a new CPU and replace it instead of buying a motherboard and a CPU which would cost more. Multi-Core Multi- Core CPU’s have more than 1 core on a single CPU Chip unit. So if it says that the CPU is Quad-Core it means that the Processor CPU contains 4 processing units on a single chip processor. Now a days it is important to check whether a CPU is single core or Multi core because most new applications or games won’t be able to work properly on a single core CPU. A Multi Core CPU performs more than 1 process (calculation) at a given time while a single core CPU can only perform 1 process (calculation) at a given time.
