HK 258 00 Foundations of Motor Skill Acquisition Spring 2010 Research in Motor Learning and Control Laboratory 4 Fitts’s Law Page 1 of 2 One of the most fundamental relations in all of motor behavior is that between movement speed and accuracy. There is a cost of moving faster. That cost is an increase in spatial variability. Fitts’s quantified this relationship in 1954. In the basic Fitts’s Law task, a research subject is presented with two targets of equal width, and D cm apart (D is measured from the center of each target). The figure below, schematically shows a Fitts’s Law task. T = a + b Log 2 (2D / W) The movement time T, will be linearly related to the logarithmic ratio (base 2) of the distance (D) to the target width (W). Lab Report As we have conducted several Fitts’s tasks already, I have a more “applied” assignment for this lab. 1. Please find three applied papers concerning Fitts’s Law. As Fitts’s Law is so

Keep a log for two days concerning your limb movements and discover at least four occasions where Fittss Law described how your movements adapted to the Index of Difficulty demands placed on you. This part of the assignment should be HK 258 00 Foundations of Motor Skill Acquisition Spring 2010 Research in Motor Learning and Control Laboratory 4 Fittss Law Page 2 of 2 two pages in length. Please describe how you observed yourself, and how you recorded your movements. In other words, you need to describe your methods. Thus, you will have a five (5)-page report. And of course, one additional page for references. I know these instructions are bit vague, but that is by design. I want you to be creative. This will be due, via email on April 9 th . Howie...
