NAME Grant Assignment #4: Methods Due: November 20, 2008 The effect of nonsteroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on the development of exercise-associated hyponatremia in athletes. Hypothesis: The hypothesis of this investigation is that taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) will increase an athlete’s risk of developing exercise-associated hyponatremia while participating in endurance athletic events.

20 subjects 20 subjects Subjects : Forty adult males 25-35 years of age, Caucasian, trained in marathon running (at least 5 previous marathons ran with average previous completion time of 3:00-4:25 hours.) No evidence of chronic or infectious disease. No previous renal system abnormalities or history of cardiovascular disease. Protocol : Forty subjects will be weighed. Then, subjects will be randomly split into two groups of twenty subjects: one group will be given 500mg of NSAID (ibuprofen) and will act as the variable group. A second group will act as the control group and will be given a placebo.
