Unformatted text preview: 9-1BUSINESS DRIVEN TECHNOLOGYChapter Nine: Enabling the Organization – Decision Making9-2OLTP vs. OLAP•Transaction processing system - the basic business database system that serves the operational (day-to-day operations) level in an organization•Online transaction processing (OLTP) – The general activity of updating (i.e. inserting, modifying, and deleting), querying (i.e. retrieving), and presenting text and number data from databases for operational purposes•Online analytical processing (OLAP) – The general activity of querying (i.e. retrieving) and presenting text and number data from data 9-3Decision Making•The following systems are used to support decision making, problem solving, and opportunity capturing:–Decision support systems (DSS)•Model information to support managers and business professionals during the decision-making process•Include On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) Tools•Excel can be a DSS–Executive information systems (EIS)•A system containing enterprise-wide information presented via simple and easy to use interfaces for quick insight and analysis by executives•Can be OLAP-tool based9-4DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS•Three quantitative models typically used by DSSs:1.Sensitivity analysis– the study of the impact that changes in one (or more) parts of the model have on other parts of the model (SOLVER)2.What-if analysis– checks the impact of a change in an assumption on the proposed solution (IF FUNCTION, SCENARIO MANAGER)3.Goal-seeking analysis– finds the inputs necessary to achieve a goal such as a desired level of output (GOAL SEEK)9-5OLAP TOOLS and EXECUTIVE INFORMATION SYSTEMS...
