REVIEW Calculate the margin of error for a sample of 1,000 rabbits. Of the rabbit sample, 600 were brown, 350 were black, and 50 were white. (1) Calculate “p hat” for brown rabbits? What does this stand for? (2) Calculate the limits of the confidence statement. A study on SAT scores was done and 5 states were excluded from the study. This is an example of what?

Does One Variable Affect Another Variable? Observational Study Observe, Record Measure Don’t Intervene! Experimental Study Observe, Record Measure Actively Intervene! Impose Treatments!
Discussion Question: Self-Paced vs Instructor-Paced Math Course Two versions of a math course were offered. One was a self-paced, independent study course to be completed within the semester. The other was a regular classroom course, paced by the instructor, also completed within the semester. Results showed that students taking the self- paced, independent study course scored higher on the final exam than those taking the classroom, instructor-paced course.

Let’s Get the Terms Straight Response variable : the variable that measures the outcome or result. Explanatory variable : the variable that we think explains or causes the change in the response variable. Subject : individuals being studied. Treatment : specific experimental condition being applied to subjects.
Self-Paced vs Instructor-Paced Math Course Can we trust the results of this study? Lurking variable : a non-explanatory variable that has an important effect on the response variable. It can hide or confound the effect of the the explanatory variable. Ex: math level of students Two variables are confounded when their effects on the response variable cannot be distinguished from one another.

Self-Paced vs Instructor-Paced Math Course How do we address confounding (lurking) variables? Randomization : we randomly select the people receiving the different treatments. Self-Paced Instructor-Paced
Placebo Effect – Another Confounder Placebo : dummy treatment given to a subject. Placebo Effect
