When Experiments Impose Treatments on People The law requires that studies funded by the federal government follow these basic principles: Organizations carrying out studies must have institutional review boards that review all planned studies in order to protect the subjects from possible harm and to decide whether a proposed study will produce valuable, statistically information. All individuals who are subjects in a study must give their informed consent . Informed Consent = Willing participation in an experiment after being informed in advance about the study’s nature and any risk. All individual data must be kept confidential . Only statistical summaries can be made public.

Confidential vs. Anonymity Confidentiality = protecting the subjects’ privacy by keeping all data about the individuals unknown. Anonymity = Subjects are anonymous – their names are not known even to the study director.
