Unformatted text preview: Gerontological Nursing and an Aging Society Gerontology The scientific study of the effects of time on human development, specifically the study of older persons. Began as an inquiry into the characteristics of long-lived people. Only in the past 40 years have serious and carefully controlled research studies flourished. Reverse ageism-largely attributed to gerontology professionals of baby boom confronting their own aging Gerontology Biomedicalization of Aging Aging is seen as a biomedical problem that must be reversed, eradicated, or held at bay as long as possible Aging is seen through the distorted lens as a disease Geriatrics-term coined by a physician who recognized that the medical care of older people involved special considerations Gerontology Who will care for an Aging Society Demand is critical for gerontological nurses and other health professionals prepared to deliver care to growing numbers of older people Growing concern is a lack of adequate staffing, particularly professional nurses, in nursing homes More direct RN time is associated with fewer UTIs, less weight loss, fewer pressure ulcers, and less deterioration in ability to perform Gerontology Organizations devoted to Gerontology Research and Practice Gerontological Society of America American Society on Aging Association for Gerontology in Higher Education National Council on Aging Gerontology Nursing Education Consortium Aging Today Demographics of Aging Chronological age Becoming a less-significant factor to consider in aging Old is a relative concept based on how one acts and feels physically, mentally, socially, and culturally Parents of baby boomers make up majority of present old numerically There is now an expanding group of very old (90+) 7 Diversity of the older population (Redrawn from U.S. Census Bureau, 2004.) 8 Age self-identification (Redrawn from National Council on the Aging, Inc., American perceptions of aging in the 21st century, telephone survey, Jan-Feb 2000.
