1) 10 medical devices: Ultrasound – Before ultrasounds were created, there was no safe way to diagnose the condition of the fetus, making birth extremely dangerous and unpredictable. The only other method was x-ray, which was harmful to both the mother and unborn child. Engineers analyzed this problem and to solve it, ultrasounds were created using waves, which are very safe. http://www.discoveriesinmedicine.com/To-Z/Ultrasound- Devices.html Pacemaker – Since some hearts don’t beat regularly, pacemakers were created by engineers to fix the problem. It sends electrical pulses to the heart to maintain a regular heartbeat. Engineers were required for the design of this to make sure that it is safe for humans. http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/abnormal-rhythyms- pacemaker Apnea machines – Many times, people, including infants, have sleep apnea, and have trouble breathing in their sleep. Therefore, engineers needed to develop a machine that would provide oxygen to keep the lungs open and help those with apnea breathe more easily. http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/lungs/aop.html# MRI – Viewing images of human internal organs is vital to health care, and magnetic resonance imaging has made that possible in a safe way. Engineers were needed to create this so that humans wouldn’t be harmed during this process. http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2003/press .html Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) machines - Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is an advanced mode of high-precision radiotherapy that utilizes computer- controlled linear accelerators to deliver precise radiation doses to a malignant tumor or specific areas within the tumor. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
