2 : ndividual numbers first and then sum the results : vidual numbers first and then square the results Psyc 227 Introduction to Statistics Dr. Fairchild General Math Review Types of Variables: Continuous Variables The true underlying variable increases in infinitely small increments. When we apply  some measuring device to the variable, however, we get a whole number on the scale.  For example, consider your weight. Although your true weight may be  124.923485721395, when you step on a bathroom scale you get a whole number of 125.  Discrete Variables  (also known as categorical or nominal variables) The variable naturally falls into categories, and no values exist between two neighboring  categories (e.g., sex, number of children in a family, etc.) Notation for Variables and Individual Scores: 1) Capital letters, like X or Y, are used to indicate variables. 2)
