Ryan Wisneski AML3311 November 8 th , 2010 Poetry Essay #4 Yusef Komunyakaa, is In the poetry of Komunyakaa, he repeating themes of the Vietnam War and Black Civil Rights are among the things that the poems constantly refer to. His poems are all based on experiences, not necessarily all true stories, but based on the most influential periods throughout American history that he was a part of. He uses repetition and vivid imagery to engage the reader and deliver his riveting stories of his past. Throughout his poems he constantly reiterates certain points so that the reader truly is beaten over the head with these themes and ideals that he portrays. In his poem entitled The One-legged Stool we see a very different style than any of his other poems. The way this poem is printed is like that of a short story and the length also is more similar to that of a short story but the language and techniques used in the piece show the underlying poetic flow.
