Ryan Wisneski September 17, 2010 AML3311 Poetry Essay #1 In the poems of the American born writer, Randall Jarrell, the ideas of war and death litter the pages. Jarrell’s poems depict the world wars with strong images of wartime scenes and the emotion that shows a pessimistic view towards the war. In the poems, Jarrell, appears to somewhat dehumanize the soldiers in death by showing that the each death of a man is meaningless. This is a very disturbing image to think of an American soldier’s as nothing more than a mistake. In the poem entitled The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner the death of a young soldier is depicted as just a mess for those who survive him to clean up, “When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose”. This is a very powerful image that does the most work in this poem even though it is the last line. To see the death of a soldier meaningless and to know that his blood is just washed out of the turret with a hose like it was some effortless chore is a riveting scene.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
