Functionalism:- University of Chicago:- John Dewey (1859-1952):- He was born in Vermont; his father was a grocer. His initial interest was philosophy; he taught secondary school: received his PhD in philosophy He taught at University of Michigan and University of Minnesota (he was a poor teacher). He became chair of philosophy department at University of Chicago in 1894. Functionalism’s” founding” started with his paper “The Reflex Arc concept in psychology”. Reflex Arc:- The article criticized elemental approach to behavior (Wundtanian and Titchener) => they said there’re three parts to reflex: -> sensory processes-brain processes-motor response. Dewey argued that the parts should not be separated. He said “stream of behavior” of like “stream of consciousness”; he said if people only study the elements, they miss behavior’s purposivness. - He’s known as “America’s philosopher”-> he passes his work to James Angell. James Angell (1869-1949):-
