Matter, Atoms, Molecules What is Chemistry? Chemistry : the study of matter (composition of the universe, anything that has mass and occupies space, everything except a vacuum; made up of almost infinitesimally small building blocks called atoms [combine together to form molecules ] ) and the changes that matter undergoes Representation of molecules o Chemical symbols and lines o 3D ball-and-stick model o 3D space-filling model simplest molecular structure- methane, 1 C 4 H Matter can exist in one of three states: Solid: not compressible, has a fixed volume and shape of its own o If you know the position of one molecule, you know the rest- crystal structure Liquid: not compressible, assumes the shape but not the volume of its container; fixed volume o Molecules are able to move relative to one another, flow o Has no definite shape Gas: highly compressible, assumes both the shape and the volume of its container Matter (classified according to its composition) Mixtures
