Unformatted text preview: Dr. Pustam October 22, 2009. Chem 127 — Fall 2009 Chapter 4 Outline Most of these topics will be covered in class. However, you need to read your textbook and mg kg sure that the following concepts are understood. 1. The role of water as a solvent (Section 4.1) — know the properties of water and Why it is a good solvent for ionic and covalent compounds. Be able to explain how water can dissolve ionic and covalent compounds at the molecular level. What is a strong and weak electrolyte. 2. Precipitation reactions (Section 4.3) — Can you identify a precipitation reaction and write an ionic and a net ionic equation for the reaction? You also need to know the solubility rules (Table 4.1) and use them to predict whether the reaction is a precipitation reaction or if a precipitate is formed in a reaction. Sample problem 4.2, pg. 148 is helpful! 3. Acid-base reactions (Section 4.4) — Can you identify an acid-base reaction and write ionic and net ionic equations for reactions of this type? Review how acid concentrations are determined from an acid-base titration. Know the meaning of end-point, equivalence point, indicatior, standard solutions. Acids are proton donors, and in an acid-base reaction a proton is transferred to the base. 4. Oxidation-Reduction (Redox Reactions, Section 4.5) — Can‘you identify a redox reaction and write ionic and net ionic equations? Be able to assign oxidation numbers to any element in a compound using Table 4.3. Be able to predict, using oxidation numbers, whether a species is oxidized or reduced. Be familiar with terms oxidizing and reducing reagents. Read the section on Redox titrations. Know that a titration can be performed using an oxidation-reducti on reaction. Be able to calculate concentration of the analyte, if given the volume and concentration of the titrant, (see sample problem 4.11).
